Spoon hut
Spoon hut is situated on the TR bank of the middle reaches of the TL branch of the Spoon River in South Westland. Spoon River lies between the Hope River to the North & Gorge River to the south.
Spoon hut is a four bunker framed & floored with treated timber. It is clad with metal sheeting & lined with building paper. Unfortunately a badly leaking corrugated iron roof causes the inside to be very damp.
JH & I appear to have been the first visitors to Spoon hut for about two years. Entries in the hut book which is six years old don't even fill one page. There are four non DOC entries in the book over the six years & we may have been just the second party to walk in during this time period.

Getting there
|
There are no tracks to this hut. You can travel overland from the Hope or Cascade Rivers or walk up from the coast. We used the latter route following instructions given by local Robert Long (Beansprout) whom we'd shared the Big Bay hut with 3 years ago. From the mouth of the Spoon walk up the river to the confluence of the two branches (c. 2hrs) then take the TR branch until near the saddle back to the TL branch. Walk thru the saddle & drop to the hut which is only 15m from the rivers edge. |
