McCoy Hut

Hakatere Conservation Park

McCoy hut is a six bunk hut located on the confluence of Franceis River and McCoy Stream, which flows down from the McCoy glacier, an easy day walk from the hut. Up the Frances river it is possible to climb up onto the Garden of Eden ice plateau (I think). To reach the hut means crossing the river at several locations, and the further up the valley, the harder. This tramp should not be attempted after a heavy rainfall. Behind the hut is a small pool that is extremely beautiful (well worth a walk to and a swim) and only takes 10 mins from the hut. To get there walk for 5 mins up the true left bank of the Frances river and you will see some cairns showing the way to the pool. The hut has 6 bunks with foam mattresses. It has no fire inside, but a place for one outside. It has a toilet. It is owned by DoC and is a standard hut, costing $5 per adult per night, or $2.50 per child. Thar are in the area. There is water available in a stream near the hut. The Watchdog Hut is further downstream.
