Hohonu Range from Kapitea Reservoir

Hohonu Range from Kapitea Reservoir

This photo was taken from the Westland Wilderness Trail (Cycle Trail) at the Kapitea Reservoir near Kumara and looks eastward towards the Hohonu Range. The unobstructed view over the waterbody gives a good look at part of the range.

The peaks from left to right are Mt French, Ben Claddagh, an un-named group at the back, Mt Smart & Mt Bruce Murray. Of these peaks only Mt French has a DOC maintained track up through the bush to the tussock & rock tops.

The Westland Wilderness Trail is a cycle trail that when completed will link Greymouth and Ross mainly via various old pack tracks, dray roads, tram & railway routes. Much of the route passes through early goldmining and native logging areas. IMO this trail is better cycled than walked however there are many good walks adjacent the trail and in some places it provides useful tramping access.

  • glennj glennj I've traversed much of the Hohonu Range over the years and only once met another party whilst in there. (Two pig hunters) Chamois are the commonest game encountered. There are no huts and few maintained tracks in the Hohonu's.
