Ellis Hut / Murderer's Hut (Hawke's Bay)
This is a historic hut which is available for recreational use. The hut was built 1884 for Poporangi Station, and constructed of pit sawn weatherboards. The hut is named for Jack Ellis, a murderer who holed up there in 1904. This hut is the oldest remaining hut in the Ruahine Ranges. The standard route to Ellis Hut starts at the Wakarara Road carpark and involves a crossing of the Makaroro River.
