This picture was taken from the crest of the Bald Range NE of Bald Hill. The tussocky and low scrub covered hill in the foreground is Fraser Peak. Bald Hill is out of shot to the right. Of the higher peaks in the distance from left to right there are; Mt Bowen, Remarkable Peak (symmetrical apex & near vertical face) and Mt Beaumont (gentley concave icecap on summit) There are great views in all directions from the Bald Hill Range tops. It is offset to the west of the main divide hence you get to see a stretch of the alps from Mt Cook in the south to beyond Greymouth in the north. The coastline north of Ross is visible as are sections south of Ross where not blocked by hills.

The Bald Range is situated in the front country of the Hokitika & Mikonui Rivers and sits east of the Totara River. Trampers rarely visit the tops yet it is nice country. The lack of maintained tracks is probably the reason. There are two good huts and one rough one within half a days walk of these tops.

  • glennj glennj The huts closest to the Bald Hill Range tops are Mikonui Flat and Explorer both of which are in sound condition. Black hut beside the Totara Valley road is also handy but it is in semi derelict condition.
