View SE from Bald Hill Range June 2013
This picture was taken from the crest of the Bald Hill Range NE of Bald Hill. The tussock and low scrub covered hill in the foreground is Fraser Peak. Bald Hill is out of shot to the right. Of the higher peaks in the distance from left to right there are; Mt Bowen, Remarkable Peak (near symmetrical apex & vertical face) and Mt Beaumont (gentley convex icecap on summit) There are great views from the Bald Hill Range tops. It is offset to the west of the main divide hence you get to see a stretch of the alps from Mt Cook in the south to beyond Greymouth in the north. The coastline north of Ross is visible as are sections south of Ross where not blocked by hills.
Bald Hill Range is in the front country of the Hokitika & Mikonui Rivers and sits east of the Totara River. Trampers rarely visit these tops yet it is nice country! Tracks from Explorer Hut & the Totara River have recently been reopened. There are two good huts and one rougher one within half a days walk of these tops
