Waiau Pass towards Thompson Pass
Looking nearly due south towards Lake Thompson (blue horizontal strip above my head), a very prominent fault to its right (though at right angles to the main Alpine Fault) and Thompson Pass at the top of the gut created by the fault.
The fault line is the very straight looking line that's running parallel and the the right of the creek that is draining Lake Thompson. I'm sort of pointing to it, in a way. You start at the bottom of the "fault" and walk alongside it (to the left) until you get to where a creek is running. Then you just follow the creek up. When you climb out of the gut (about 2/3 of the way up), that puts you level with the lake. Next day, you rejoin above where you left, and continue up through a little bit of permanent snow and after half an hour you're at Thompson Pass!
