Salvation Hut
Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park
This is a privately built hut and not maintained by DOC. Located in the Kaimai Mamakau forest park off the Leyland O'brien tram line.
There was 2 fairly new wooden bunks with foam mattresses wrapped in black polyethylene, but apparently it used to have hammocks.
Hut is constructed from mainly light steel framing, with some wooden framing around the door and across the roof.
Appears to have been built in the early to mid 80-s, it has an old damp log book that appeared to have its initial entry in 1987 and the last log was 2004 at the time we visited in 2008, there was hardly any logs between those two dates. Condition is fairly good except for the floor that is made of plywood and rotting in a few places in the floor. Would serve as a good emergency shelter, needs a cleanout.

Getting there

Quickest access is from the end Ngamuwahine road, taking the track up along the Leyland O'brien tramline, the hut is located in an area known to locals as the "long swamp" There is a track that branches off the Leyland O'brien track marked with old orange permolat markers that leads to this clearing, we had trouble finding it at first, but the junction is marked with tape and a triangle pointing in the direction. The clearing is shown on the topo map. Hut is 20M due south of the dead tree. |
