Hunters hut (Westland)
A six bunker NZFS hut built in 1974. It is on the TL of the Wanganui River just above the confluence with the Lambert River. This hut replaced a slab hut and kept the name of its forebear. Hunters are still the main users of the hut but a steady trickle of trampers use the hut as well.
It's a reasonably steady half day walk to reach this hut from the Wanganui roadend. It involves a fair bit of boulder hopping, flats walking & a cage crossing of the Wanganui River. (unless river flows are low & fording is possible) Upstream of Hunters hut the Wanganui starts to get gnarly and is a place for the experienced.

A marked route starts from the parking area which is a short distance up a gravel road off SH6. The turn off for this road is on the TR of the Wanganui River approx 400m E of the bridge on SH6. Not so long ago you could drive an extra 2.5km beyond the current parking area so access times are up a bit on what they used to be. The DOC sign says 5 hours which would be about right for parties that are reasonably fit. (It recently took us 4.5hrs going in with full packs & we're reasonably fit) |
