Diggers Hut
Ruahine Forest Park
Diggers Hut has been washed away.
Diggers Hut in the Ruahines. A spacious 4-bunk hut at the back of a flat of waist-high grass in the Southern Ruahines. Featuring a pioneer stove, river water and a meat safe. A sunny spot - when it's sunny.
Accessed down a broad but boggy cut track down a ridge from Takapari road, with a 1km splash down the river at the end. Alternatively 5km up the Makawakawa River from the bridge on the Pohongina Valley East Road - a riverbed route with wet feet but nothing tricky - no swimming required. There's also an overgrown track via private farmland along the ridge to the north of the hut - again starting from the Makawakawa bridge - but landholder permission is essential.
