Hinerua Hut
Ruahine Forest Park
Hinerua hut is on Hinerua Ridge in Ruahine Forest Park.
A tidy 4-bunk lined hut with a good woodburner. A far warmer and quieter night than the nearby Smith's Stream, but less in the way of character and rats.
The hut gets quite a bit of use by people accessing the park via private land to the east (with consent) - and is not the remote, unvisited location you might expect given the difficulty of reaching it via DOC land.
Most other people see to visit from Mill Rd. On reaching the Makaretu River on the track from Mill Rd, a track climbs over private land to the park boundary on Hinerua Ridge sth of pt 908. A good cut DOC track follows the ridge from there.
Alternative DOC route head up creek west of Hinerua Ridge & climb spur between 1st & 2nd side creeks. Small waterfall near confluence of creek but ok going beyond. Good campsites after 300m.
