Whangaehu Hut
Tongariro National Park
Built on the eastern slopes of Mt Ruapehu in the 1960's, with spectacular views across the Rangipo Desert and down the Whangaehu River. While Dome Shelter is located at 2670m, overnighting is prohibited except in emergencies making Whangaehu Hut the highest accommodation in the North Island. Managed and maintained by the New Zealand Alpine Club bookings are essential for this tiny get away in the middle of nowhere.
