Buster Shelter Hut
Oteake Conservation Park
A basic 1-2 person biv in the Oteake Conservation Area, in the Kakanui range between Naseby and Kurow.
The shelter lies beside the historic Buster Diggings gold mining area: an expansive (>1km2) area of mined land on a saddle on the summit of the Kakanui range. The whole area now glistens white with the quartz(?) crystals left behind by the mining. Many other smaller similar areas dot the surrounding hillsides.
The hut was restored in early 2010, and has one bunk 1.5 mattresses long. An additional half mattress lies under the bed allowing a 2nd person to sleep on the floor if topping and tailing is not your thing! There's a small metal cooking shelf, a candle holder and a water bucket - handy as the nearest water supply is 100m away down the Little Kyeburn track.
The hut lies at the upper end of the 1-3hr Little Kyeburn tramping track. It is also on the Mt Kyeburn loop track, and 1-2km from the 4wd road to Buster Diggings. Mountain bikes are permitted.
