Buckland Peaks hut
Situated just above the bush line in the headwaters of Omanu Creek in the NW corner of the Paparoa Range near Westport. This is a newish DOC hut that replaced a Venturer Scout hut.
The hut is quite popular as is the walk above the hut to the jumble of rocky granite bumps and tussock known as the Buckland Peaks. There are great views in all directions from up there. It takes about an hour to get up onto the Buckland Peaks from the hut & you could easily spend a couple of hours checking out the varying views from the different bumps.

Getting there
|
Signposted from the Buller Gorge Road (SH6) just over 1km East from the junction with the Coast Road. You can drive a short distance to a carpark then the road is blocked by a padlocked chain. A mountain bike would be useful at this stage as there are several km's of road to negotiate before the start of the track proper at the base of a spur running up to the Paparoa Range. (a mountain bike saves c. 40mins of walking one way. From the carpark & with a bike it took 3hrs to reach the hut) |
