whio1 After traversing Newton Range to Styx, crossed the river at the hut sign and went for a look on 04.12.13. After initially mucking around in the bush without the track info, found some markers then got onto the old track. The track climbs away from from the Styx up into a really nice area of mature native trees to the Mid Styx Hut. There is also a tops track continuing onwards and upwards for the more ambitious. The hut is in a sunny clearing looking across towards the Newton Range. About 40 min from the turn off sign. The hut is dry and clean. Track through to Tyndall Ck is in pretty good condition also and the creek down to the Styx junction straightforward. Cross just slightly upstream, on a diagonal and you'll find yourself on the other side just under the Styx Valley track. Currently straightforward and about waist level at its deepest if your 6'2"! We'll be back!

glennj In April 2013 the ford of the Styx at the Tyndall Ck confluence was the best it had been for years with shingle having reduced the depth & smoothed the bottom. It may still be good if the shingle hasn't been flushed out.

glennj Both the Tyndall's creek track and tops track are in good nick having had recent volunteer maintenance in 2010. The Tyndall Ck route is best left for fine weather & lowish water levels though or the Tyndall Ck boulder hopping may not be enjoyable and the ford becomes more of a swim.
Yes the ford near the confluence of Tyndall Ck & the Styx has not been good for a while (over waist deep) As "johnboy" commented carrying on down the TL of the Styx where a well marked stoat trapping line links onto a series of grassy clearings is an option. Currently good fords exist at the end of the 4x4 track or about 10 mins upstream. (turn right after exiting the 2nd cutting when heading up the main valley track for this ford)
Though each route to Mid Styx hut takes about the same time the up valley route is definitely easier going than the Tyndall Creek route. Making the round trip to Mid Styx hut & back in good weather is a nice day trip.
Blue, grey & paradise ducks are usually seen whilst doing this walk.

Honora Thanks for that info. It would be nice to go back via the Tyndall Creek track and get onto the Browning range.

glennj Hi, Regarding the top ford near the wooden sign. That ford is usually only used when the river is too dodgy to cross down valley opposite the the track to Mid Styx marked with the big orange triangle.
This ford is marked with a small cairn on the main valley track just before stoat trap 67 in a position from which you can look across the river and see the start of the track to the hut. In the gloom you probably couldn't see the big triangle across the river. It's good that you've done the extra marking as it'll assist people who carry on to the sign before looking for a ford.
I had a bit of a rat experience at the hut late May myself so carried in & layed rat poison there earlier this month. More rat bait has been left in a jar in the hut for others to apply as required so hopefully rats will be a thing of the past soon.

johnnboy When I am walking back from the Mid Styx I like to follow the route down Tyndalls ck to the Styx, then staying on the true left rock hop downstream and then link grassy clearings and cross the Styx at a good ford opposite the limit of 4wd access.
