From the highway, the road follows the river and becomes too rough for most cars. The track leads off the 4WD track and comes to a junction after 30 minutes. A route leads over the river to the Caledonian Battery, however we'll pass that on the way back. So keep to the true right bank and follow the old 4WD track through pretty beech forest. A small tailrace is passed at the top ford, and you may spot a vague trail to an old mine shaft. A brief climb leads to a second shaft and a Robey engine in good condition, abandoned where it once worked on the Caledonian Mine.
Return to the top ford and cross upstream to the "Trout Pool". Take the trail right over open bracken-covered flats on the true left bank, past the Argyle Tunnel and stamper battery. The track soon disappears, so follow the riverbank and ford just above an island to an orange marker on the opposite bank. This is the junction mentioned earlier. Head downstream back to your car.
