Wakelings Hut
Ruahine Forest Park
Wakelings Hut sits in beech forest on the south side of the Wakamaka River in the Ruahine Ranges. It's an older ex-forestry hut, but has a platform rather than individual bunks. The platform sleeps 5 but only 4 mattresses are present. The open fire and surrounding beech trees make is a slightly damp hut in winter, and the absence of a table means you'll be eating tea off the sleeping platform or small cooking bench. However, in a shaded spot by the river it should make a pleasant summer location. The large roofed veranda is a nice touch. Water is from the creek 50m distant.
Hut book entries refer to travel up- and down-river to Waikamaka Hut and Otukota Hut respectively - so it can be done if you're really that keen.
