Iron Gate Hut
Ruahine Forest Park
Iron Gate Hut (sleeps 8, stove, stream water) sits on the beech-forested banks of the Oroua River. It's a comfortable hut, with two sleeping platforms, a large table, benches and all you'd expect. The hut is old, but has recently been relined and is in tidy condition. The only (minor) let-down is the small stove, which takes a long time to heat the hut on a cold night, and even longer to cut wood small enough to fit!
From the hut down-river there's a good sidle track to Heritage (I mean well maintained: it does all the usual sidle track nonsense - unexplained climbs and falls, the lot), though the river-bed provides faster travel if the water's low and the day's warm.
Upriver a track climbs over a knob before descending back to the creek, followed by river travel all the way to Triangle. The river route is also possible if you don't want the climb.
A 2-day loop trip via the sidle track one way and the Tunupo tops the other is possible from Heritage.
