Middle Head Hut
Middle Head hut lies at the head of the Moeraki Valley, Westland. It's a warm, comfortable hut with a good stove.
Theres a reasonable track from SH6 via Blowfly Hut and Horseshoe Flats Hut. Above the hut it's alpine routes, either up the north or south fork. Hut book entries report crossings to the Paringa, or to the Clarke / Landsborough via Mt Zeilan.
There was an all-golden Kea living in the mid-slopes of the scree face at the head of the north fork of the valley above the hut in 2004 - hopefully it's still there. DOC tried to keep the location secret, reporting it as 'Fiordland' - but I see it's now out there on the web so regard myself as likewise free to report it!
