Arete Hut
Tararua Forest Park
DOC's website states that they upgraded the small, cold Arete Biv to a 2-bunk 'Arete Hut' in 2007.
Arete lies on both the Northern Crossing and the Tararua Main ridge. Both are excellent multi-day tramps, and do not attract the high traffic of the Southern Crossing, so peace and tranquility are a possibility, if not ensured.
This is an alpine biv with no heating, so bring warm gear!
The new bivvy is actually classed as a hut now, with 2 bunks and is quite cosy. The new hut Is now on the route up to Arete(or down) there is a large tarn just above it slightly NE of the hut. Water supply is by water tank.
