Takapari A Frame Hut / Travers Hut / Traverse Hut (Ruahine)
Ruahine Forest Park
Travers (6 bunks, no matresses) is a very basic A-frame hut on the Takapari Road in the Southern Ruahines. There's a concrete floor and wooden sleeping platform and not much else. It's damp and dingy and not a very nice place - though a welcome shelter in a storm, no doubt.
The hut can be reached on foot or by 4WD (or high clearence 2WD in dry conditions) alond the Takapari Road. The buldosed track continues south along the summit of the Ruahine Range for about 6km beyond the hut. Tracks shown beyond this connecting to Wharite are completely overgrown and it's solid 3m-high leatherleaf for most of the way. Not recommended. The only remaining hut south of this location in the Ruahines is Keretaki Hut.
Two tracks drop to the Tamaki River, one from the hut (to Tamaki West roadend) and one from the corner of the Takapari Road at point 1170 coming out 1km downstram of Standfield Hut. Other tracks to Tamaki are now overgrown by leatherleaf.
