Puketutu Hut
One of the old North - South Track Huts. This is a great little hut sitting on the top of the main Kaimai Range. The hut has 2 good bunks and 2 good mattresses, along with a third, not so good, mattress to go on a not so good bunk.
Fireplace is an old wood burner with no door. The clearing round the hut would be suitable for maybe one tent. The wind over the ranges would make tenting a dodgy at the Heli Landing.
An old marked route climbs the Kaimai Range directly behind the hut, making it a good base to explore the tops or for a route-type crossing to Kauraitatahi - for the more adventurous. Though this is apparently an overgrown and muddy track.

The Puketutu track links the New North - South Track with the Old North - South Track. The track starts just across the stream from a marked intersection, most notably a mock grave with a deer skull. |
