Hurunui Hut, Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park
Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park
The hut has been upgraded - has been reclad and now has a porch - no longer the old corrugated iron shack. It is located on the North-South Track, one of several humble abodes that avoided the axe. Small but comfortable. Water supply is now from the stream next to the clearing.

Getting there
|
3 hours walk from the Kaimai Road Summit, between Tauranga and Matamata. A rough track starts from the carpark directly opposite the spring. No signposts are here, just cross the creek, and look around for the obvious track heading north, and old permolat markers. After tackling the hill, it's all flat, grassy tramline tracks. Once over the Hurunui Stream, approx. 3 hours on, there's a signpost. New sign points down the well cut off shoot from the main track down to the hut. |
