Awapoto Hut
Abel Tasman National Park
Nice medium size hut, 12 bunks, wood stove. Seldom used compared with the huts on the Abel Tasman Coast track. Quite spacious with large windows. Set in big grass clearing, it was surrounded by beech trees until ex Cyclones Fehi and Gita cleared the trees away. The bonus is uninterrupted views down to Awaroa and Tasman Bay. Plenty of firewood available in bush around hut.

Getting there

In Abel Tasman National Park, on the inland track, approximately 5 1/2 hours walk from Canaan carpark. Track follows farmland from Canaan to Wainui Saddle, from which it climbs to Evans Ridge. The junction to Awapoto Hut is reached approx 3/4 hour from Wainui Saddle. The track to Awapoto is quite rough in parts. The hut is 4 hours from the junction and is 2 min away from main track. The Totaranui Rd is reached after a further 2 1/2 hours of pleasant, mostly downhill walking from the hut. |
