Top Forks Hut (Wilkin)
There are two huts at Top Forks (total 16 bunks, stove / fireplace, firewood available, tank water). The smaller is an old 6-bunk forestry style hut with fireplace, and may be occupied by the warden in the summer season. The larger 10 bunk hut is spacious and comfortable, with amazing views of Mt Pollux and the glaciers up the Wilkin North Branch.
There's a lot to see around the hut, with routes leading up the North Wilkin, and Wonderland valleys. The Wilkin is particularly popular for daytrips to lakes (Lake Castalie and Lucidus Lake) and glaciers at its head.
Many visitors are passing through on the Rabbit Pass track from the South Wilkin to the East Matukituki. For those heading south to the Matikutuki, this is the last hut on the route - it's camping from here on, so make the most of a night of comfort. That said, good, comfortable camping spots exist at Ruth Flat and Junction Flat, and camping is also possible at the river head just over Rabbit Pass.
