Macauley Hut (14 bunks, matresses, stove, firewood provided, water, bath, mountain radio, gas cookers) is a luxury option for those wanting to stay in the Macauley Valley. It's owned by the McKenzie Alpine Trust and open to the public. Payment is by cash donation (box provided). The bath is outside, and is heated by lighting a fire in the fireplace underneath! The hut is stone-built, with a huge verandah and is by far the most beautiful modern hut I've seen.

The hut may be reached by 4WD up the valley floor - but above the hut it's unmarked routes only. Many day-trip options exist: exploring the Macauley up to glaciers at its heads, ascending Lower Tindall Stream to tarns and views of glaciers of the Sibbald Range.

Alpine routes lead to the Havelock via Timms Stream and Camp Creek / The Growler. The col at the head of Lower Tindall Stream leads to the Godley via North Branch.

NB: Waterfall and Stony Stream huts downstream have been burnt down.
