Neave Hut
Neave Hut (6 bunks, matresses, stream water, stove, limited firewood) is a comfortable forestry-style hut in the upper Whitcombe Valley, some 5km below the Whitcombe Pass. It can be a cold place: the evening sun blocked by the glaciers atop Mt Evans west, the morning sun by the main range of the Alps east. Get that fire cranking!
For those tramping up river, the stretch from Wilkinson to Neave is where things become spectacular: opposite, the Wilkinson & McKenzie glaciers drape over cliff-edges on either side of Mt Evans, waterfalls plunging from their rims to the Whitcombe below. The track also becomes more challenging: frequent creek crossings, and the climbs / descents typical of sidle tracks.
Above the hut the cut track leads as far as the bush-edge, and from there it's a riverbed route to the pass, with scrub on either side for the first couple of km. Tongues of ice descend into deep 'U' shaped side valleys from the Bracken snowfield to the west.
