Poet Hut
Poet Hut (4 bunks, matresses, fireplace, river water) is a timber built hut in a small clearing in the Mungo Valley. The hut lies just above the river, and excellent swimming pools can be found a short distance upstream.
The hut is most commonly a stopover on the several day Toaroha-Hokitika, or Toaroha-Whitcombe-Raikaia valley tramps. As such, most people drop into the valley from either Homeward Spur or Toaroha Saddle, and leave by the other.
Options for exploring downstream have been limited with the destruction of the swingbridge below Bluff Hut - the river will only be crossable in very dry conditions.
Another option is a rough route continuing upstream to Mungo Hut from where it is possible to continue over the Mungo Pass or Hokitika Saddle into the Wilberforce.
