Crawford Junction Hut
Crawford Junction Hut (6 bunks, matresses, tank water, stove) is by far the nicest hut in the valley. It's of wooden, not tin comstruction, and the inside walls and floor are timber-lined. A roomy verandah looks out over flats at the junction of the Crawford and Kokatahi rivers. There is only one hut - the second hut has been removed. Don't be put off by the DOC 'basic' rating - it's a lovely, warm, comfortable hut in a great spot.
Whilst a nice place to visit of itself, the hut lies on two possible loop tramps:
- Kokatahi/Crawford to Styx via Lathrop Saddle: valley floor and sidle tracks up the Kokatahi/Crawford valleys, a poled alpine route over Lathrop Saddle, and a benched track down the Styx valley.
- Kokatahi to Toaroha via Zit Saddle: valley floor track and rough river-bed route up the Kokatahi, a partially poled alpine route over the Zit Saddle, and a cut track down the Toaroha.
