Top Crawford Hut (Removed)
Top Crawford Hut (4-bunks, matresses, tank water, no fire) is a typical forestry-style hut. It's located on a small terrace several hundred meters above Crawford Creek, about halfway between Crawford Junction Hut at the confluence with the Kokatahi, and Top Crawford Bivouac, at the head of the valley.
There's not a lot to do at the hut itself, being perched so far above the valley floor, and the valleysides being steep. Large expanses of scrub above the hut make any routes directly up from the hut look hard going - those wishing to climb Mt Lathrop are better advised to head up to the Top Crawford Biv first, beyond the scrubline.
The hut's walls are lined, and as such it may be warmer than the bivouac, and it is poissible to stand up inside - another bonus. But the biv is in a much nicer location with great views, and provides ready access to the peaks and to Lathrop Saddle. If it's not too cold, you might want to consider staying at the biv.
