Dunns Creek Hut
Dunns Creek Hut (4 bunks, stove, limited dry firewood, tank & creek water, mattresses). The hut sits at the back of a marshy flat beside Dunns Creek, about half way between the confluence with the Taipo River and the summit of the Newton Saddle.
Note that the track up Dunns Creek from below the gorge is wrongly marked on topomaps. The track does NOT sidle the Dunns creek side of the ridge, as shown on the map. Heading up Dunns creek, follow the river to where Dunns Creek gorges out at the 1st large (impassable) waterfall, cut through the 1st section of bush on the true left, to a large scree descending from the ridgeline (a clear tongue is shown on the map). Start ascending this scree, then cut onto the defined ridge on your left at a convenient point. You will pick up white track markers on this ridge, which though overgrown, will lead to the hut. If this seems daunting, take the longer, maintained track via Mid Taipo Hut.
