Red Hills Hut
Mount Richmond Forest Park
The Red Hills Hut sits on the saddle between the Motueka (right branch) and the Wairau, and at the base of the Red Hills Ridge. The 60-year old hut was replaced in March 2010. The hut makes a good base for exploring the spectacular Red Hills to the north-east, and a convenient stop on the track down the Motueka Valley.

SH63 (N29 075379). 4WD track leads to the hut from SH63, from the 1st gateway west of the bridge. There is no signpost from the road. It is unclear if access permission is required. 7km, 1.5 hrs. Porters (Creek) Hut: 10.5km. Track. Top Wairoa Hut: 21km, 8-14hrs. Easy ridge route to pt1749. Alpine route (hard scramble) from pt1749 over Red Hill. 2 small peaks nth of pt1770 before Red Hill are tricky, but can be avoided by dropping into hanging valley on west of ridge. |
