Mid Wairoa Hut

Mount Richmond Forest Park

Mid Wairoa Hut (6 bunks, matresses, tank & river water, stove) sits on flats 20m above the Left Branch of the Wairoa River. The river has good swimming holes, and but for the sandflies this would make a very pleasent spot for the night. A lovely dressed timber forestry hut.

When I visited in 2007 the grass clearing outside was a post-pig-rooting disaster area, effectively ploughed. Following bridge work, DOC had kindly left a large stack of cut wood on the opposite side of the swingbridge to the hut: maybe we must carry one log each to pay our passage?

The Hut is easily reached as an overnight walk up the Wairoa from the Wairoa Gorge Road, and also may be a useful resting place for those heading further upstream to the Top Wairoa Hut over Mt Ellis or to the Red Hills. A circuit up the river from the Wairoa Gorge roadend and back via Tarn Hut and the Lee River also appears possible, though some walking on forestry roads or car shuffling would be required.
