Evangeline Bivvy

Lake Sumner Conservation Park

A 2 bunk old Forestry Service bivvy up Evangeline Stream behind Lake Sumner. The small but well equipped biv is comfortable and has a fireplace and small bench. A stream runs right beside the bivvy.

This bivvy is obscured by mountain beech trees and could be hard to find if you don't pick up the overgrown track downstream on the TL that leads to the biv. The gps co-ordinates that were on here on checking were well out but they have now been corrected.

Getting there
Getting there
Use the around Lake Sumner track. From the campsite at the Evangeline Stream mouth head up or beside the stream to the bivvy. There are overgrown tracks in places sparsely marked with blue tape and blue baling twine plus the odd cairn. One section of gorge has a series of small cascades to get past but it is possible so long as the stream is not in flood. One 3m high boulder has a knotted rope slung over it to enable getting up or down. DOC time is advised as 5hrs but half that is generous!
