Junction Huts (Bains Conservation Area / Old Man Range)
These two huts sit at an old gold-mining site in the headwaters of the Pomohaka, between Old Man Range and Waikaia Bush. They are in the Bains Conservation area. They are in tussock a long way from the nearest bush - some firewood is provided, but none available for collection.
The Old Junction Hut (basic, sleeps 3, fireplace) is a stone built miners/musters hut, with three beds and an open fire. Plenty of character but a tad chilly in winter. New Junction Hut (standard, sleeps 7, wood/coal range) is the old Beaumont telephone exchange. It has a bedroom and kitchen. In mid-winter there'll be a fight for the single bed in the kitchen by the fire (I've had 2 nights here when my water bottle's been frozen solid in the morning)!
These huts are not marked on topomap G43. They are 200m upstream of the 'Old Gold Workings' shown on the map. A lovely spot for a winter weekend escape, or a break on the crossing from Roxburgh to Waikaia bush.
