Route Description
From the Coral Track Car Park, ascend the Coral Track to Rome Ridge. Continue along the ridgeline to an altitude of about 1740m. The last 200m of this ridge is exposed in places, and some scrambling is required. A rope should not be necessary unless you continue too far up Rome Ridge.
Sidle off the ridge into the basin towards Point 1825. Snow can fill this basin until late in the summer, necessitating the use of an ice axe and crampons.
Once the ridge is regained, follow it along to Avalanche Peak. Again, there are some exposed sections: take care if it is windy.
Return via the Scotts Track or the Avalanche Peak Track. The Scotts track is easier on tired knees, and brings you out closer to the start.
