Studholme Saddle Hut
Kaweka Forest Park
Studholme Saddle Hut (sleeps 6, river water, wood burning stove) is a comfortable, sheltered, riverside hut in a small area of bush just below Mad Dog Hill, and close to Kaweka J. The hut is less than 1km from Studholme Saddle Biv, which lies further downstream at the river fork. The location is a sun-trap and was pleasently warm after freezing cloud on the tops. I imagine it is roasting on a hot summer's day. No decent camping spots near hut, but plenty of options down at the biv.
The route down from Mad Dog is not obvious: the route from the track on the summit is signposted: down the ridge immediately to the east of the hut. However, the point at which the route leaves the ridge is not marked: it drops west off the ridge immediately above the point where the bush in the valley begins. Markers begin again on the bushedge leading to the hut.
A good route to Kaiarahi leads up the ridge opposite (south of) Studholme Saddle Biv.
