Purity Hut
Ruahine Forest Park
The new Purity Hut (6 bunk, tank water, wood burning stove, limited firewood available in locality) is loated on the scrubline on the ridge west of Wooden Peg peak. The hut site is about 200m up the track from the site of the previous hut, replaced in 2006. The hut is modern, well built and well insulated. On a cold winter night, the outside temperature was -5 degrees by the morning , but still 14 degrees inside, despite the fire having burnt out before midnight.
On a good day, the hut provides excelent views to Ruapehu, Taranaki, the Tararuas and the Seaward Kaiouras, not to mention Manawatu as far south as Palmerston North. The track in from the roadend is well marked and suitable for walking at night for those with some experience. As such, the walk in makes a good after-work option, and morning views can make this a very rewarding trip. Wooden Peg summit lies about 2km (30 min-1 hour) from the hut, and Mangaweka 1km beyond, giving options to explore from the hut.
