Comet Hut
Kaweka Forest Park
Comet hut (sleeps 4, tank water) is classed as a basic hut / biv, but is comfortable and of a similar standard to many 'standard huts'. The hut is located at the roadend of Comet Road, off the Gentle Annie / Napier - Taihape road. Given the rate at which road-end huts are being removed, it comes as no surprise that, as of 2006, DOC has the hut slated for 'removal withing the next two years'. This will come as a loss for those, wishing to continue on foot from the Northern Ruahines to the Kawekas, as it will leave a long gap between Shutes Hut, the northernmost Ruahine hut, and Kiwi Saddle, the southernmost Kaweka hut. Perhaps more of an issue in summer will be the loss of the water tank which provides the only water source between the Taruarau and the Napier-Taihape road. The walk down to the Taruarau flats and historic Shutes hut is recommended but steep. UPDATE : March 2014, hut and tank are still there and in good nick. Route down to Taruarau is know locally as 'Hell Hill'
