The Cass Ridge Track is an easy descent into Ohinetahi Reserve. Walk down and back or form a long and varied loop by returning via the more challenging Bivvy Track.

From the Sign of the Bellbird, head south for a couple minutes along the Crater Rim Walkway. Look for the marked junction, and follow the Cass Ridge Track easily down through regenerating scrub. The track passes the end of Ellas Track by some old lacebarks and opens out onto grassland. In a few minutes, the track passes an impressive view into a bush gully beneath Cass Peak, before dropping through scrub to meet up with O'Farrells Track.

O'Farrells Track is an old bulldozer trail the roughly follows the contour lines. Take it north to form a more challenging loop by returning via the Bivvy Track, or simply return the way you came.

Walking times:

  • Crater Rim Walkway junction to Ellas Track: 10 minutes
  • Ellas Track to O'Farrells Track: 15 minutes
