Herepai Hut
Tararua Forest Park
An older huts lower than the bush line. It has a cast-iron fire, two platforms for sleeping quarter. It holds around 10 people.
Basic but nice.
Steady 2.5-5hrs climb which crosses over 2 swingbridges, the 2nd one has a bit of height in it though

Getting there
|
Is from the end of Mangatainoka valley road near Eketahuna.
Half the track is the same as the one going to Roaring Stag Lodge. A good ridgeline route runs south to Dundas. Heading north to Burn Hut the ridgeline becomes scrubby, but was largely recut through the leatherleaf in 2013 and is currently passable, if a little rough. |
