Fenella Hut
Kahurangi National Park
The hut was built as a memorial to Fenella Druce who was one of 4 people killed when the Three Johns Hut in Mt. Cook National Park was blown off its site.
Gas stove, indoor water, cooking gear.
There's a 10-minute walk along a track to a swimmable tarn on the saddle. Walk on past the tarn for a good view of Burgoo Stream and the limestone cliffs above.
For the fit & experienced, Xenicus Peak can be circled in about 5-7 hours. From the tarn, follow cairns down to the foot of Xenicus Peak, and begin to climb it. Look out for the odd Permolat or Marmalade Tin Lid. The path tops out into a tussock basin. Head west for the summit of Mt Gibbs, from which you follow a knife edge ridge around to Round Lake. A track leads from here along the shores of Cobb Lake, etc.
