Classic Top of the South trip. Did a variation of this going via Sunset Saddle, Gunsight Pass, Waiau Pass, Thompson Pass, Upper Durville (actually I think we passed through our own little notch in the range here) and Three Tarns Pass. Spent nights at Hopeless, Cupola, Blue Lake and Ada Pass Huts plus a night bivvying it by the Matakitaki River East Branch (what can I say, apparently it's a long way from Blue Lake to East Matakataki Hut!). Some big country but not too challenging that it should deter any experienced and well-prepared trampers. Not many places you can stand within 10 metres of a chamois and have it stare back at you! | |

Stunning tramp - we went via Robert Ridge, Cedric Tk, Sabine Valley and Waiau, Thompson, D'Urville, 3Tarns Passes. |
