Beautiful day up there today. The view into the Ashburton Lakes basin and through to d’Archiac is always something special. Scree buttercups everywhere. | |

Following directions from Wilderness, we took a left at the stile and made our own route up - only joining the poled route near the summit. Rather than riding the ups and downs of the ridge we sidled along the side to reduce the gradient. There was a bit of snow around which made for a pleasant climb. There were patches where thick vegetation made the going a bit tougher but by staying near the ridgeline this was manageable. Fantastic views from all the way up - that's why I love Hakatere! After a lunch break at the top we took the poled route down which wasn't as bad as feared but could be hard yakka going up I'd imagine. Just short of 3hours up and 90 minutes down. A bit of snow and fantastic views. As climbs go, it was pretty 'fun'! | |
