The track between Smiths Stream Hut and Hinerua Hut has been washed away by a large, unstable slip.

Backcountry Trust have marked a detour with red and pink flagging tape. But you must have the skills and equipment for bush-bashing and to navigate off-track if you lose the flagging tape.  

At Hinerua Hut, the route starts with red markings from the heli pad. At the stream, follow the red tape to the edge of the bush and follow from there.

The bottom section of the route is steep and requires care. Expect this to add 30-60 minutes onto recommended track times.
