This photo is taken from slightly uphill of & beside the John Hayward Memorial Hut (Kowai Hut) in the Kowai River headwaters near Porters Pass in Canterbury. The part of the range pictured includes , The Gap, a gunsight like col that is easily spotted from a distance. The high points on this section of the Torlesse Range almost reach 2000 metres altitude.
