From the Avalon car park, cross the Cardrona River, and follow a steep, unformed route onto the Criffel Range. From here, it meanders easily to the summit. A water race and the Criffel Diggings are nearby.
From Little Criffel, the route continues along the ridge, and drops back toward the road, into the Larches Conservation Area. This features native broom, along with matagouri and kanuka.
Some sections of track cross private land. Use stiles, and do not disturb stock. Access from The Larches car park is clsed for lambing between 10 October and 10 November every year.
