A man called Joe
The Joe River;I haven`t been there, yet,it`s on the list but I`d like to know how this largely unheard-of river got its name. There`s a few sound-likes,but this particular one has its headwaters in the Olivine Plateau & flows into the mighty Arawhata River. The indupitable Arawhata Bill, back a year or three, used to traverse this area in thigh waders, armed with a shovel & in the company of his packhorse,Dolly.Still on the hill into his seventies, this man & others, prospected, hunted & explored throughout this area & I just want to have a look & soak up some of the history.Starting with a name.Anyone help?

Yarmoss Theres some good photo albums online of the general area. Havnt seen one that specifically goes up the Joe, yet, in my quick search. Some photos looking into the Joe from the Barrier and Snowdirft Ranges http://www.southernalpsphotography.com/Tramping/Aspiring-Region/Marion-Plateau-Mt-Lydia/i-SKpDjCv A trip that drops into the Arawhata briefly:http://www.southernalpsphotography.com/Tramping/Aspiring-Region/Whitbourn-Arawhata/i-Lk8sHgg This trip goes up the Arawhata, crosses the Olivines and descends the Cascade: http://ninadickerhof.smugmug.com/TrampingandmountaineeringinNew/Aspiring-Region/Arawhata-Cascade-feat-Mts/i-dKHqs7j
