This walk is very popular, with a constant procession of people making the easy journey to the foot of the glacier. Barrier fences block access to the glacier itself. The front face of the glacier is unstable and liable to collapse at any time.
From the end of the car park, the track leads through young forest past the Sentinel Rock side track to the edge of the riverbed. A marked trail leads past a waterfall and over silvery schist cobbles to the view of the lower glacier.
The side trip up onto Sentinel Rock takes about 10 minutes from the junction, and provides a good view up valley and an explanation of the changing glacier.
