This view of the hut looks SW. The hill in the background is Mt Newton which is on the opposite side of the Arahura river to Newton Creek hut.

Back in the mid 1970's perhaps the heaviest concentrations of blue ducks (whio) I encountered in Westland were on Newton Creek. Today there are still blue ducks present but the density appears to be much less than it once was.
